Combat shirt

sort

Wearing a body armor or tactical vest in combination with a standard field jacket, especially in hot weather, causes significant discomfort. The thick fabric under the armor doesn’t breathe, causes overheating, gets soaked, and dries slowly. The solution to this problem is the specialized combat shirt — a hybrid clothing element known as a combat shirt. It is designed for maximum efficiency when protective or tactical gear is worn over the body.

Who and What Conditions It's For

Originally developed as tactical clothing (a top layer for special forces), the combat shirt has become the standard for many professionals and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Military personnel, special forces, law enforcement. This is the primary audience. This clothing provides comfort during hours-long wear of body armor, patrolling, or combat missions.
  • Airsoft and paintball players. A suitable model for tactical games. It protects the arms, provides torso ventilation, and allows comfortable wear of load-bearing systems.
  • Hunters, hikers, travelers. Valued for its durability, functionality, and ability to wick away moisture when moving with a heavy backpack.
  • Shooting instructors. Allows for comfortable training sessions on the range, demonstrating proper handling of weapons and gear.

Features

The main distinguishing feature of this clothing type is its two-component construction. These are functional shirts and, at the same time, a well-thought-out tool.

  • Materials and Functionality. The central part (torso, back, underarms), which lies under the body armor, is made of thin, elastic, moisture-wicking materials (e.g., Polartec® Power Dry®, Coolmax). This breathable combat shirt wicks moisture away from the body, dries quickly, and prevents overheating. The sleeves, shoulders, and collar are made of durable, wear-resistant Rip-Stop fabric (cotton, polyester, or nylon blends), protecting the arms from branches, abrasions, and minor injuries.
  • Pockets. Located on the shoulders, not the chest, allowing access even when wearing armor. Pockets usually close with zippers and have Velcro panels for patches.
  • Protective Inserts. Many models feature elbow compartments for inserting pads. A shirt with protective inserts provides extra joint protection when shooting prone or moving actively.
  • Velcro Cuffs. Allow secure fastening at the wrist, preventing the sleeves from riding up or letting in dirt and insects.
  • Stand-Up Collar with Zipper. A high collar protects the neck from rubbing by gun slings or gear straps. A short zipper allows ventilation adjustment.

How to Choose a Combat Shirt

To buy a combat shirt that becomes a reliable part of your gear, consider a few key points.

  1. Torso Material. For hot climates, choose models with ultra-light, mesh materials. For moderate temperatures, opt for denser moisture-wicking fabrics.
  2. Sleeve Material. In forest environments, Rip-Stop fabric is better — it resists tearing. For range or urban use, standard blended fabrics are suitable.
  3. Fit and Size. A combat shirt under body armor should fit tightly around the torso like thermal underwear but still allow freedom of movement in the shoulders and arms. Always check the manufacturer’s size chart.
  4. Quality. A good-quality military combat shirt is not a saving — it’s an investment in efficiency and comfort. Pay attention to stitch consistency, hardware reliability, and brand reputation.
